For the Uncommon Student Seeds of Inclusion – UW Oshkosh March 2015 Peggy Marciniec – UW Platteville Rea Kirk – UW Platteveille Regina Pauly – UW Platteville Common Core Standards

What are Educational Standards? learning goals for what students should know and be able to do at each grade level. benchmarks that ensure that students have the skills and knowledge they need to be successful. information that helps parents and the public understand what is expected of children by the end of a grade level.

What are the CCSS? Grade level benchmarks that Were developed by education departments and governors from 48 states (2008). Are a set of articulated standards for ELA, math, and Literacy on All Subjects. Are designed to make students college and career ready. Provide teachers with consistent goals and benchmarks. Specify what students need to know and be able to do by the end of a grade level.

Which states? Full implementation in Wisconsin: school year Forty five states, the District of Columbia, four territories, and the Department of Defense Education Not adopted in Texas, Alaska, Nebraska, Virginia, Minnesota (ELA only).

What is different in ELA? Regular practice with complex texts and their academic language Reading, writing, and speaking grounded in evidence from texts, both literary and informational (in K-5, a ratio of fiction to nonfiction) Building knowledge through content-rich nonfiction (in grades 6-12, the Literacy for All Content Areas CCSS ensure that students can independently build knowledge in content disciplines through reading and writing.

Here’s an ELA Anchor Standard Literature: Key Ideas and Details College and Career Readiness (CCR) Anchor Standard 1: Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text. (The same standard across multiple grade levels)

GradeGrade-Specific Standard Kindergarten With prompting and support, ask and answer questions about key details in a text. Grade 1Ask and answer questions about key details in a text. Grade 2 Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text. Grade 3 Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring explicitly to the text as the basis for the answers. Grade 4Refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.

Grade 5 Quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text. Grade 6 Cite textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text. Grade 7 Cite several pieces of textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text. Grade 8 Cite the textual evidence that most strongly supports an analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text. Grades Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text. Grades Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text, including determining where the text leaves matters uncertain.

What’s different in Math? Greater focus on fewer topics Coherence: linking topics across grade levels Rigor: - conceptual understanding as in understanding key concepts such as place value -procedural skills and fluency relative to speed and accuracy in calculation - application with equal intensity as in correctly applying the mathematical process required in everyday situations

Math - topic Measurement and Data K-5 Progression Kindergarten – describe and compare measurable attributes Grade 1 – measure lengths indirectly by iterating length units Grade 2 – measure and estimate lengths in standard units Grade 3 – solve problems involving measurement and estimation of intervals of time, liquid volumes, and masses of objects. Grade 4 – solve problems involving measurement and conversion of measurements from a larger unit to a smaller unit Grade 5 – Convert like measurement units within a given measurement system.

What about students with IEPs? Must be challenged to excel within the general curriculum and be prepared for success in their post- school lives, including college and/or careers Must have improved access to rigorous academic content standards for students with disabilities SO, In order for students with disabilities to meet high academic standards their instruction must have Designed supports An IEP specific to learning goals and needs relative to CCSS, teachers who are prepared and qualified (corestandards.org)

And further…… “Promoting a culture of high expectations for all students is a fundamental goal of the Common Core State Standards. In order to participate with success in the general curriculum, students with disabilities, as appropriate, may be provided additional supports and services, such as: Instructional supports for learning― based on the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL)2 ―which foster student engagement by presenting information in multiple ways and allowing for diverse avenues of action and expression.” (corestandards.org)

What about other Uncommon Students? Second Language Learners? Kids from poverty environments? Gifted students?
