Animal Behavior Common Core Standard: Cite specific textual evidence to support analysis of primary and secondary sources.

Look at each picture below from the video. Discuss how this animal can provide safety for itself. Discussion

Notes Living together – animals travel in packs to provide safety for each other. Migration – animals move to areas where there is food and water. Hibernation – if food isn’t available, animals may sleep a long deep sleep and live off of stored food or fat. Camouflage – animals blend in with the surroundings so their predator won’t see them. Conservation – some animals have the ability to store food for long periods of time. Changing Appearance – some animals can change their appearance by looking bigger.

Game Directions: Divide students into groups. You will be given a situation. Determine what is the best way to provide safety for yourself in this bad situation. Write down your answers. For each round, each group will read out a solution to the situation. The teacher will determine the best and second best answers. Best answers will earn two points, and second best answers will get one point. Most points at the end of the game wins.

Game Round #1 You are a komodo dragon. You have come upon an injured water buffalo. What should you do to survive?

You are a hippo traveling with a group of hippos. Your best friend has decided to yell very loudly which catches the attention of a pride of lions. The lions start to ascend on you and your group. How do you survive? Game Round #2

As the youngest elephant in your group, what is the best way for you to survive since you are the most vulnerable animal in the group? Game Round #3

You are a giraffe and are starving for food. You are getting weaker by the minute. A pack of lions is near and awaiting attack. What do you do to survive? Game Round #4

You are a beautiful warthog. While walking solo to a water hole, you notice that five cheetahs are following a half mile behind you. What do you do to survive? Game Round #5

You are a lion who is starving. Where do you go for food, but still keep yourself safe? Game Round #6
