Christian Lay Vocation God’s ____ to love and serve God and neighbour in a p_________ way: as P____, P____ and K______ Why should Christians care about justice/ things happening in the news? Why should Christians be caring for others and responsible in their daily life? Why should Christians make time for prayer in their day?

Holy Orders (Ordination) Pries t Deaco n Bishop What do these three all have in common ? What are their differences ? To define Holy Orders/ Ordination To describe the role of a deacon To evaluate the role of a deacon

Holy Orders (Ordination), and the Role of a Deacon 1. How did the idea of priesthood develop? -In general -In Christianity 2.What is ordination (Holy Orders)? 3.How does it change a person? Priesthood developed because in all civilisations, people were needed who would be responsible for worship, making sacrifices to God, and handing on religious teaching. Sometimes these people were given special authority. They might even live apart from the rest of the community. Jesus chose 12 men to be his disciples. He sent them out to preach as apostles. After his death, they became responsible for handing on his teaching – healing, preaching and baptising. Men who feel a special calling to serve God and God’s people can take the Sacrament of Holy Orders. They can be ordained as either deacons, priests or bishop. In ordination, the man receives a special spiritual character – to act in the place of Christ.

What is Holy Orders? -A sacrament -Taken by a man to be a deacon, priest, or bishop -Gives them a special spiritual character to act in the name of Christ

1.Write “deacon”, “priest” and “bishop”. 2.Under each heading, write the matching facts about them. **How important is a deacon’s role? are Bishop’s assistants. All of them wear dog-collars, only they wear a mitre (hat) and crozier (staff). Can be married men with full time jobs can give all the Sacraments Parish duties - baptisms, weddings, funerals, visiting sick/ prison etc Lead in prayer - read the gospel in Church, give the sermon, lead prayer, (can’t say Mass/ do other sacraments) They can give all the Sacraments except confirmation or Holy Orders. are priest’s assistants. Are successors to the Apostles Help to rule and guide the Church Preaches the gospel, celebrates Mass, cares for the faithful

Deacon What can they do? What can’t they do? Parish duties, visiting sick/ prison/ hospitals/ Leading in prayer – gospel, sermon, prayers.

The Early Christian Church Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. How is the life of the early Apostles linked to the lifestyle of men in Holy Orders today? **How do these activities reflect the life of Jesus?
