Introduction to counselling skills. During this unit you will gain insight into: Counselling theories Skills and qualities of a counsellor Importance of counselling and supervision in Health and Social Care This unit does not give you a qualification to become a counsellor. To become a counsellor you must undertake rigorous training from a BPS recognised training provider.

What is counselling British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) definition of counselling “Counselling takes place; when a counsellor sees a client in a private and confidential setting to explore a difficulty the client is having. A distress they may be experiencing or perhaps their dissatisfaction with life, or loss of a sense of direction and purpose”

What does a counsellor do? The counsellor is qualified in counselling Defined confidentiality Managed activities Regular supersivion The client leads The clients chooses to attend or not Counselling code of ethic Set appointments The counsellor can begin to perceive the difficulties from the client's point of view and can help them to see things more clearly, possibly from a different perspective. Counselling is a way of enabling choice or change or of reducing confusion. It does not involve giving advice or directing a client to take a particular course of action. Counsellors do not judge or exploit their clients in any way. Counsellors do not discuss their own personal lives
