Recycling Plastics C and D Waste Stream Mylinda Jacobsen Envision Plastics

 The disposal of plastics in landfills raises concern because they are slowly degradable and the choice of handling plastics waste by incineration raises the issues of the fly ashes and bottom ashes disposal. These plastics can be recycled if they are sorted and not mixed with contaminants.

Types within the C and D waste stream  Polyethylene  Polystyrene  PVC

Plastic Drums  HMW containers  Handle is not HD  Blue/white  Recyclable?  Markets?

HDPE buckets  High level of contamination  What to do with this  Export but good markets exist domestically  Package better Stack and palletize Handles pose issues

Export Processing

Cut in to pieces and if all HD or pvc good markets. Quality issues.

Totes Inserts can pose problems but you can still market this item

Crates  HDPE  Very Recyclable  Local and regional markets

Plastic Lumber  Composition  Color  Metal  Treated  HD or PVC?

PS items from nursery

Mixed Color PET  Difficult  Export is possibility

Tool box-HD

Other items  Tubs and lids  Mixed color films  Garbage bags  Pesticide containers  Flower pots

Misc items

What to do with those odd plastics  Call a market you have a relationship with. Easier to market full loads.  Competitors  Other Coordinators  Be careful of quality issues. Clean and segregated material gets top dollar.

Remember to Recycle those items that you typically Recycle  PET Bottles  HDPE Bottles (Envision)  Clear stretch film  Pepsi crates
