THE CLOUD FOREST SCHOOL is a non-profit, bilingual, progressive, environmentally-focused, private, PK-11th grade school located in the storied cloud forest of Monteverde, Costa Rica. AT A GLANCE: Campus: 106 acres of primary & secondary cloud forest located at 5,000 feet above sea level. THE BASICS Dates: June 16-July 18, 2014 Min/Max Participation: 1 Week/5 Weeks Programs: Children; Counselors in Training (CIT); Adults Ages: 3-12 years old; CIT 13-17 years old; Adults 18+ Accommodations: Hotels, Home Rentals, Homestays w/Costa Rican family are all available – CFS staff can help arrange lodging that best suits you & your family Food: Homemade lunches prepared w/local, organic ingredients are available on program days for all participants. Dietary restrictions (e.g. vegetarian, gluten-free) will be accommodated to the best of our ability. Fee: $650/participant (child or adult/week – discounts available for half-day program, multiple weeks & Friends of CFS)* Fee Includes: All supplies & activities, 1 field trip & 1 community activity per week, Spanish & Env Ed instruction, daily transportation to & from school, lunch, camp t-shirt, internet access, orientation & support Not included: Airfare, lodging, international insurance, other meals, weekend activities. ☼ All participants enjoy a progressive, experience-based approach to environmental education, tropical agriculture & Spanish language instruction. ☼ Culturally unique activities in art, cooking, music, soccer & dance in addition to weekly field trips provide insight into the people & places that make up Monteverde. ☼ Community service, reforestation & campus construction projects provide the opportunity to give back to this vibrant community. *for more details, see program fee chart on page 8

ADULT PROGRAMS Participate in guided hikes, community conservation activities, field trips & soccer games w/your children; Take intensive Spanish lessons with our highly trained Costa Rican teachers in groups created according to level. Lessons focus on conversation & grammar taught through interesting activities – from cooking to gardening to dancing. LODGING CFS External Relations will assist families in choosing the “best fit” when it comes to accommodations. Lodging options may vary according to length of stay. Recommended options include: 1-3 weeks: Hotel Room or Vacation Rental 4+ weeks: Rental Home/Apartment For parties of 1-3 people, homestay placements with local families are also available. The price is $20/day per person. This includes: 3 meals/day + laundry service once a week A private room in the home of a Costa Rican family whose children attend the Cloud Forest School. Additional Summer Programs INTERNS VOLUNTEERS CFS Interns work full-time as teaching assistants for a specific age group or in a “specials” area of their choice (art, culture, sports, etc). Depending on their goals and experience, interns may assist with one-on-one or small-group work; teach lessons or even entire units. Interns be 18+, must demonstrate experience and a strong desire to work with children. Cost: $2,000 for 5 weeks, including homestay and Spanish. Volunteers assist with Land Stewardship projects on our 106-acre campus. A typical day might include gardening, reforestation, trail maintenance and/or facilities improvement projects. Summer volunteers regularly work with students during Environmental Education classes and will receive 10 hours of Spanish classes per week. Applicants must be 18+ and commit to at least 3 weeks. Cost: $1,200 (for 3 wks, incl. homestay.) VISITING GROUPS Visiting groups of students or professionals can visit the CFS for one day or one or more weeks. The CFS organizes campus service projects, reforestation, presentations by local experts, tours, activities, lodging, and meals. Many campus improvement projects are completed by visiting groups with the guidance and good cheer of our land stewardship crew. Prices are available upon request. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS   Do I/we need a visa? All US and Canadian citizens enter Costa Rica on a tourist visa (a stamp in your passport—no paperwork needed!) that is valid for 90 days. What is the weather like in June/July in Monteverde? We typically experience warm, sunny mornings and brief showers in the late afternoon. The temperature ranges from 71°F (21.7°C) – 81° F (27°C). Is Monteverde safe? Absolutely! Theft and crime are minimal in Monteverde, though we do recommend that all tourists exercise normal precautions when traveling. What health care options are available in Monteverde? There is a private health clinic in town with an ambulance, laboratory, and bilingual doctor available 24-hours a day. How do I get to Monteverde? The San Jose International Airport (SJO) is about a 3 ½ hour drive from Monteverde. You can take a public bus, a semi-private shuttle , a private taxi, or rent a car to get from SJO up the mountain.
