Wind Energy By Kofi Kwakwa & Christian Caillaux

What is it? Wind power is the power that is derived from the wind. This energy is used to generate electricity or mechanical power. Examples of Uses: -grinders used for grain -water pumps -to charge batteries. When used to carry out these processes, wind turbines are also known as windmills, wind pumps or wind chargers.

Wind Turbines It is used to convert kinetic energy into mechanical energy. This is called wind power. If used to produce electricity: wind turbine or wind power plant. If used to drive machinery: windmill or wind pump When used for charging batteries: wind charger

Facts & Figs 199,064 turbines at the end of 2011spinning globally. There is currently 21.7 MW of wind power capacity installed per 1,000 km of land area in the EU, with the highest densities in Denmark and Germany. The Enercon E-126 has a rated capacity of 7.58 MW, an overall height of 198 m (650 ft), a diameter of 126 m (413 ft), and is the world's largest-capacity wind turbine since its introduction in There are two wind turbines situated in Paproc, Poland, which standing 210m tall, are the tallest wind turbines in the world.

Advantages Wind is free. No green house gas pollution. The wind turbines are extremely tall and thin. Efficient space management. Not unpleasant visual features. They diversify the landscape. Wind power can be used as an independent source of power It is a renewable source of energy.

Disadvantages Wind variations cause inconsistent efficiency. Some people think it ruins the landscape. Noise pollution. Pollution is a result of the construction of wind turbines. Wind farms must be vast in order to produce enough energy to power large settlements. Majority of power is lost in the transportation of energy.

Case Study: Kent The Thanet wind farm is located in the district of Kent, England. It is an offshore wind farm, meaning it is situated on the sea. It is the second largest offshore wind farm on the planet. This can be extremely convenient, as the wind turbines would take up no land space. And the people from nearby villages or towns would not have these huge machines right outside their windows.

Case Study: Kent Maximum output of 300mw. Cost: 780 to 900 million pounds. Opened 23 rd of September 2010 (largest offshore wind farm worldwide, before it was surpassed by Walney wind farm). Total area: 35km² Has 100 wind turbines. Placed 12km off of the coastline. There are 500m between each turbine Finally, the energy is supplied to the population via two submarine power cables.
