The death of soldiers made life in the trenches disgusting. Soldiers had time to think and sometimes worried about what might happen. There were dangers and disgusting creatures in the trenches. Artillery bombardments seemed to destroy and terrify soldiers. Some soldiers were bored and wanted to fight. The rain and the mud made the trenches miserable and dangerous. Soldiers had to be careful from snipers. The British Army wanted to distract soldiers from the reality of the war. Some soldiers kept detailed diaries.
