Consider a Career in the Nonprofit Sector GSC offers: Certification in Nonprofit Management and Leadership through Nonprofit Leadership Alliance Nonprofit Leadership and Management Minor Both Certification and NPLM Minor 2

What is “Nonprofit”? The “Nonprofit Sector” is the collective name used to describe institutions and organizations that are nongovernmental and do not exist to make money for owners or investors. Nonprofits are essential organizations that address community needs, advocate for community and social change, and engage citizens in democratic problem solving. 3

Nonprofit subsectors include: Arts, Culture, Humanities Educational Institutions Environment and Animal Related Foundations and Philanthropic Organizations Health and Human Services Youth Work International, Foreign Affairs Public, Social Benefit Religion-Related Mutual / Membership Benefit Organizations (includes unions, trade associations, political groups, etc.) So broad that everyone could find themselves employed by a nonprofit at some point in their careers! 4

Nonprofit Certification includes: Meeting 10 Professional Development Competencies Attending 1 Leadership/Management Institute Participating in the Student Association for two semesters Leadership and service activities Complete a 300 clock-hour internship Earn your bachelor’s degree 5

Some Interesting Statistics More than 50,000 new professionals are needed annually to fill youth and human service positions Health Services sub-sector employs the most people in the nonprofit sector; and number increases each year ( ) 845,233 nonprofits registered in US as 501(c)3 “public charities”; 1.4 million registered nonprofit organizations Over 450 students were certified last year and more than 3,000 college students are annually enrolled in the certification program nationwide at over 50 colleges/universities 6
