LAKEISHA WESLEY

Content Area: Science Grade Level: Grade 7 Summary: This lesson will be used to establish knowledge of ways to remove contaminants from water. Learning Objective: Given the stages of the water filtration cycle, the student will be able to describe the water treatment processes that occur at a treatment plant and arrange the water filtration cycle in the correct order with 100% accuracy. Grade Level Expectation: GLE Evaluate how human activities affect the earth’s land, oceans, and atmosphere. Accomplishments: Develop an understanding of the stages of the water filtration cycle.

Water suppliers use a variety of treatment processes to remove contaminants from drinking water. Water may be treated differently in different communities depending on the quality of the water which enters the plant. Aeration is the first stage of the cycle and it is the process of increasing the oxygen saturation of the water. Coagulation is the second stage of the process which allows dirt and other suspended solid particles to chemically stick together into floc so they can easily be removed from water. Sedimentation, the third stage, is the process used to settle out suspended solids in water under the influence of gravity. THE STAGES OF THE FILTRATION CYCLE

Filtration, the fourth stage, is commonly the mechanical or physical operation which is used for the separation of solids from fluids (liquids or gases) by interposing a medium through which only the fluid can pass. Disinfection is the final stage of the cycle and is the process of removing, deactivating and/or killing of pathogenic microorganisms. Click on the link below to watch a video to understand how to filter your own water Thirstin's Water Filtration Lesson Continued…

A.CoagulationCoagulation B.SedimentationSedimentation C.AerationAeration What is the first stage of the filtration cycle?

Aeration is the first stage of the cycle and it is the process of increasing the oxygen saturation of the water.

A.GravityGravity B.FlocFloc C.Chemical ReactionChemical Reaction The dirt and other suspended solid particles that chemically stick together is called what?

Dirt and other suspended solid particles to chemically stick together is called floc. Click the link to read more information about Coagulation and Flocculation WST - About Coagulation & Flocculation

A.TrueTrue B.FalseFalse True or False: Disinfection is when your mother uses bleach to clean the house?

Disinfection is the final stage of the filtration cycle and is the process of removing, deactivating and/or killing of pathogenic microorganisms.

In this lesson you will have learned the steps of the filtration cycle. You will have learned the definition of each cycle and also how they each work. You will also watched a video on how to filtrate your own water. SUMMARY
