Water suppliers use a variety of treatment processes to remove contaminants from drinking water. Water may be treated differently in different communities depending on the quality of the water which enters the plant. Aeration is the first stage of the cycle and it is the process of increasing the oxygen saturation of the water. Coagulation is the second stage of the process which allows dirt and other suspended solid particles to chemically stick together into floc so they can easily be removed from water. Sedimentation, the third stage, is the process used to settle out suspended solids in water under the influence of gravity. THE STAGES OF THE FILTRATION CYCLE

Filtration, the fourth stage, is commonly the mechanical or physical operation which is used for the separation of solids from fluids (liquids or gases) by interposing a medium through which only the fluid can pass. Disinfection is the final stage of the cycle and is the process of removing, deactivating and/or killing of pathogenic microorganisms.
