NVQ Business Languages – a Successful Alternative

NVQs are: National Vocational Qualifications Developed by industry Designed to recognise a candidate's competence in the workplace. Widely recognised by employers Accredited by OCR, Edexcel, C&G

Main features Portfolio based Assessment based Each language skill or ‘unit’ assessed i.e. –Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening Levels 1 – 4 in Languages available –schools mainly 1 & 2

Achievable No exam Small, manageable verified assessments Feedback and revisit assessments Use reference materials e.g. portfolios, notes, dictionaries, reference sheets etc Simulating the business world!

What is an NVQ worth? QCA approved qualification Value of units for performance tables: –Level 1 = 7 points per skill (unit) –Level 2 = 12.3 points per skill (unit)

What do the units add up to? Level 1: 4 units x 7 points = 28 Level 2: 4 units x 12 points = 49.2 or: Level 1 writing 1 x 7 points + Level 2 speaking, reading, listening + 3 x 12.3 points Total= 43.9
