Background The International Network of Health Promoting Hospitals (HPH) Objective: Reorientation of hospitals. Integrate health promotion, disease prevention and rehabilitation in services provision. Policy and principles: Ottawa Charter for Health promotion,1986 Vienna Recommendations on Health Promoting Hospitals, 1997

The aim of a health promoting hospital is: to provide high quality comprehensive medical and nursing services, to develop a corporate identity that embraces the aims of health promotion, to develop a health promoting organizational structure and culture to develop itself into a health promoting physical environment that actively cooperates with its community. What is a HPH?

The Health Promoting Hospitals project References A Health Promoting Hospital does not only provide high quality comprehensive medical and nursing services, but also develops a corporate identity that embraces the aims of health promotion, develops a health promoting organizational structure and culture, including active, participatory roles for patients and all members of staff, develops itself into a health promoting physical environment and actively cooperates with its community.

General principles A health promoting hospital aim: To change itself into a health promoting community setting. A health promoting hospital aim: To change itself into a health promoting community setting. Budapest Declaration (1991) “empowerment for health” becomes an integral function of the hospital compared to the traditional concept of treatment and rehabilitation.

General principles Vienna Recommendation (1997) Three kinds of affiliations :  Regional/National Networks (facilitate cooperations and experiences exchange)  International Network (allows the participation of those hospitals not belonging to any regional or national network)  Thematic Networks (make hospitals equal through health promotion homogeneous activities).
