COLONY OF NEW YORK By Alex Tangas and Hailey Palm

GEOGRAPHY/LOCATION Hot, humid summers, and bitterly cold windy winters with lots of snow made up new York’s climate. It is located along the Atlantic Ocean in the Middle Colonies. Its geography is made up of mountains, plains, and hills. A river called the Hudson River runs through New York.

REASONS FOR COLONIZATION The New York colonies colonized because they were competing for wealth. England followed an economic policy called mercantilism, which is trying to gain wealth by controlling your trade and establishing colonies. The colonies made money for England by giving resources to their industries. England turned the resources into goods that they could sell to other countries and to its own colonies.

FOUNDER The New York Colony was founded by the Dutch but discovered and colonized by Henry Hudson, which is why the river that runs through New York is called the Hudson River.

DATE The New York colonies were founded in September 1609 by Henry Hudson and the Dutch.
