Smart Home for disabled people Students: Atara Gutman and Anastasia Logvinenko Instructor: Alexander Kinko Midterm Presentation Semester Spring part A

Introduction Many tasks around the house that seems really simple for us sometimes become a big issue for disabled people. In our project we would like to help those people to manage and complete some of those tasks in an easier way, so they can be more independent, and live care free.

Project’s Concept Building a smart home system for full management and control of house devices. emphasis on:  Fitting disabled people needs  Cheap system

Table Of Contents Control and system functionality Top level system Goals of part A Block diagram – part A PC - ZedBoard communication line wired sensors The Z-wave Protocol Z-wave products Performed Project’s Activities Until Now Risks Future activities Time flow

Control and system functionality: Controlling devices around the house Security system Detecting emergency and act properly. Detecting failures in the house “talking” with the tenant – visually. Energy saver Abilities: Switching the lights Controlling the air condition Set the water temperature in the shower Controlling machines such as TV, washer, dishwasher, microwave and more. Motion, fire, failure detecting.

Smart home: Top level system Z-wave module PC zedboard wireless sensors wired sensors

Goals of part A  Create basic PC - ZedBoard communication line  Connect 1 wired sensor and control it  Connect 1 wireless sensor and control it

The Z-wave Protocol The protocol consist of 4 layers, the MAC layer that controls the RF media, the Transfer Layer that controls the transmitting and receiving of frames, the Routing Layer that controls the routing of frames in the network, and finally the application layer controls the payload in the transmitted and received frames.

The Z-wave Protocol (continuation) The Z-Wave protocol has 2 basic kinds of devices; controlling devices and slave nodes. Controlling devices are the nodes in a network that initiate control commands and sends out the commands to other nodes, and slave nodes are the nodes that reply on and execute the commands. Slave nodes can also forward commands to other nodes, which make it possible for the controller to communicate with nodes out of the direct radio wave reach.

Z-wave products Z-wave module ZM5304 Sensors:  Temperature  Light switch  Smoke detector  Wall plug  Doors and windows manager  Fluid  Air condition

Z-wave products (continuation) Our Problem: To develop with Z-wave, we need the SW of the Z-wave protocol which is provided by “Sigma Designs”. Possible solutions:  Get the SW from “Sigma Designs” (preferred)  Replace the Z-wave protocol with Zigbee protocol which is an open source protocol

Performed Project’s Activities Until Now HW: Connect the 5 buttons of the ZedBoard Connect the 8 switches of the ZedBoard Connect RX TX pmod UART0 Connect the pmod to the ARM Connect the AXI Interconnector Marketing: Order wired sensors Find necessary wireless sensors (in progress) Find necessary module for the Z-wave protocol (in progress)

Risks May not achieve NDA agreement with Sigma designs. Options: Switch Z-wave to ZigBee open source protocol Use wired sensors only Importing communication Antenna Into Israel Options: Order using privet account Fly to Europe and buy there

Future activities - Part A  Connect leds  Connect rx, tx and FPGA processor  Connect 1 wired sensor  RX TX communication  Controller design and algorithms  Connect 1 wireless sensor:  RX TX communication with Z-wave module  Translate information into orders  Send orders to the system according to the translated information

Future activities - Part B Part B  Connect Multi-sensors  Multi RX TX communication  Multi Controller  User interface  Writing the SW for the tenant control in the house

Time Flow Part A sigma NDA Risk - No NDA Connect leds FPGA rx tx processor wired sensors arrive Risk - sensors arrive on time Wireless sensor & module & antenna order Connect wired sensor RX TX communcation, Controller design & algorithm Wireless sensor &module & antenna arrive Risk – wireless products arrive on time connect wireless sensor RX TX communcation, Controller design & algorithm exams weddingweddingweddingwedding
