Notes. Fossils are perserved remains or traces of living things. Fossils normally form in sedimentary rock. Hard parts are the only parts of an organism.

What is a Fossil? A Fossil is the the preserved remains or traces of living things.

How do fossils form?

How Fossils form.

Types of Fossils: Mold

Example of a Mold

Mold A hollow area in sediment in the shape of an organism or part of an organism

Cast

Cast: a solid copy of the shape of an organism. This type of fossil is the opposite of a mold.

What do cast and mold fossils have in common? They both preserve details of the organism’s structure.

Petrified Fossils

Fossils in which minerals have replaced all or part of an organism. Example: petrified wood

Carbon Film Carbon films are an extremely thin coating of carbon on rock

Carbon Film

Trace Fossils Provide evidence of the activities of ancient organisms. Example: a fossilized dinosaur footprint

Trace Fossils

Preserved Remains Remains that are preserved with little or no change. Examples: Animals who died in tar pits, remains of organisms preserved in ice, or amber.
