Thesis Statement Workshop March 18, 2015

Editing and Revising  Complete “A Wining Combination” with your family.  Vocab pg. 124 due tomorrow  25 Books for 25 Book Campaign due May 1.  You need your Tangerine books today.  You need your writing journal and your STAAR Folders.

Learning Target  Today we will: practice writing thesis statements  So we can : Identify and create successful thesis statements  I will know I have it when I can : Create a successful thesis statement on demand.

Thesis Workshop  Thesis statement: The thesis statement is a single sentence that expresses the whole idea the essay is to develop. The thesis is to the whole paper what a topic sentence is to a paragraph. A good thesis is:  Restricted  Unified  Precise  Restricted - the sentence is narrow enough to be covered in the space available/  Unified - the sentence has only one dominant idea to prove.  Precise - phrasing that permits only one interpretation. There should be no vague words like interesting, great, colorful, fantastic.
