Tregoze Primary School Wednesday 15th July 2015 Getting ready for Year 6 Tregoze Primary School Wednesday 15th July 2015

Maths The children will complete three papers. - One arithmetic paper - Two papers on reasoning and problem solving.

1034 + 586 472 – 9 2.5 – 0.05 1.28 X 100 50 000 – 500 1440 ÷ 12 2331 ÷ 37 12 – 6.01 54 X 23 15.4 – 8.88 95% of 240 17 X 1.5

Times Tables These need to be learnt by heart. The trickiest tables are 6,7,8 Knowing them will help in all areas of Maths Lots of fun games on Internet (BBC times table grid game)

Column Addition 2536 +1787 4323 1 1 1 This includes decimals and adding more than four digit numbers

Column Subtraction 53413 - 3 3 9 2 0 4 This includes decimals and subtracting up to 2 four digit numbers

Long Multiplication 43 X32 86 1290 1376 This includes multiplying a 3 digit by a 2 digit number

Short Division For trickier tables we encourage the children to write the times table down the side of their page. They need to be able to convert remainders in the answer into a decimal and a fraction. 7 5 8 r2 372942 e.g. 758 2/5 or 7 5 8. 4 372942.20

Fractions Adding fractions with same and different denominators 2/5 + 1/5 = 3/5 2/5 + 1/10 = 4/10 + 1/10 = 5/10 = ½

Reading Please listen to your child read as often as you can. The key skills are pace, pause, pitch, and power Ask them questions - Directly from the text (key points) - Inference questions (how does the character feel? How do you know?) There are library challenges for reading over the summer.

Writing They need to always plan what they are going to write. Think about using a range of openers (using fronted adverbials) Think about using a range of punctuation (including semi colons, commas, hyphens, brackets) Think about using a range of connectives Most importantly, they need to edit their writing. Do they have any words missing? Can they use a better word? Connective? Spellings!
