Powers and Exponents Objective: Learn to use powers and exponents.

Two or more numbers that are multiplied together to form a product are called factors. Ex. 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 = 16 5 × 5 × 5 = 125 When the same factor is used several times, you may write it using exponents.

The exponent tells how many times the base is used as a factor. base The common factor is called the base 2 exponent factors base For example: 2× 2 × 2 × 2 = 2 4 exponent factors base Numbers that use exponent are also called powers.

Example: Write each power as a product of the same factor (Or write each power in expanded form.) = 7 × 7 × 7 × 7 × 7 Seven is used as a factor 5 times. Your Example: 9 5 = Example 2: 5 3 = Example 3: 8 7 =

You can evaluate or find the value of powers by multiplying the factors. You can evaluate or find the value of powers by multiplying the factors = 2 × 2 × 2 ×2 × 2 = 32 Numbers written without exponents are in standard form (or the final answer after you multiply the factors.) Examples: 4 3 = 10 2 = 3 5 =

Powers - Words Five to the second power or Five squared Four to the third power or four cubed Two to the fourth power.

When they ask you to write it in exponential form …. When they ask you to write it in exponential form… × 3 × 3 × 3 = 3 4 9× 9 × 9 = 1 × 1 × 1× 1 × 1 = 6 × 6 × 6 × 6 =

Homework: Write each power in Evaluate each expression. Write each power in Evaluate each expression. expanded form. (Answer in standard form) expanded form. (Answer in standard form)
