Magnetic Disk Storage Optical Laser Discs Damian Brain

Magnetic Disk Storage Most common physical device for storing files. Holds 500MB – 9 GB Disk Rotates at about 3600 rpm = about 90 mph. The time taken to access a particular block consists of: Time to move the heads to the right track - the seek time. Time waiting for the sector to come round to the head - the latency. Time to actually transfer the data - the block transfer time. To do all these tasks takes about ten milliseconds.

Optical Laser Disks Mostly Videos and music. Not the same Play-station or XBOX discs. Don’t hold much data, but can hold quite a bit.
