 There are around 1,600 giant pandas remaining in the wild, now confined to forest areas high in the mountains of south-western China. Their low population levels are not helped by the panda’s fragmented habitat and infrequent breeding; apart from being a solitary animal, the female panda remains on heat for a mere two or three days each spring. The giant panda has a digestive system similar to that of a carnivore, but has adapted to being a specialised bamboo feeder. For example, the panda has strong cheek teeth with broad, crushing surfaces, and wrist bones that help the panda to have the dextrous forepaws needed to handle vegetation. As the panda's digestive system is not designed to process plant matter, they cannot easily break down the cellulose in bamboo. This, coupled with the low nutritional value of bamboo, means they must eat huge amounts - each day eating for up to 14 hours and consuming up to 38 kg of food.

 Pandas live in areas of abundant bamboo, specifically the mountain ranges of southwest China. These mountains lie within the Sichuan, Gansu and Shaanxi provinces of China. The Sichuan province sanctuaries are home to more than 30% of the world's panda population. In the Qinling mountains, pandas can be found at elevations of 1,300 to 4,000 meters. The forests in the mountains are cool and wet. Pandas climb to higher elevations on the mountain as the summer heat intensifies.  Although bamboo has a low nutritive value, it is green all year round and easy to get. There are fewer food competitors in the bamboo forests than elsewhere. Therefore it provides a stable and abundant Giant pandas have evolved to live on a diet of mainly bamboo

 The Panda is native to China but lives in a much smaller region than they once inhabited. They have been pushed into the mountains of a few provinces scattered in southwestern China. Mostly in the Sichuan Province, and some can be found in the Shaanxi and Gansu provinces as well. They have been found ranging as far as the eastern rim of the Tibetan Plateau.
