Project Title: Development of A Self-Assessment Process For Correctional Agencies To Review Their Staffing, Programming, Classification, Disciplinary, And Work Assignment Processes For Potential Racial Disparity Date Submitted: July 18 th Inquiry review process: days Application Process: 1. Submit Inquiry; 2. If proposed work aligns with the foundation’s priorities and budget limitations, will be asked to submit formal proposal; 3. Meet with the program officer to discuss the scope and budget of your proposed project;. 4. Submit formal proposal; 5. Proposal review process -- 3 months. Less than 1 percent of inquiries made to the Ford Foundation result in a grant. 2

Goal: Develop a self-assessment process for correctional agencies to review their staffing, programming, classification, disciplinary, and work assignment processes for potential racial disparity. Project Activities: Field test the process in four jurisdictions to assess the usability, relevance, and results of the assessment and modify it, as needed. Create an instructional “handbook” to assist agencies in conducting and interpreting the self-assessment checklist for their jurisdictions will be developed. Products: 1. Agency self-assessment checklist; 2. Handbook; and 3. Report documenting the checklist, field test findings, and key indicators of racial disparity. 3

Project Title: Racial Disparity within Correctional Agencies: Prevalence Across of State Correctional Agencies, Development of a Self-Assessment Tool, and Strategies for Eliminating Biased Policies and Processes Date Submitted: July 25 th Inquiry review process: 30 days No information on rate of funding of inquiries. 5

Goal: Develop a self-assessment process for correctional agencies to review their staffing, programming, classification, disciplinary, and work assignment processes for potential racial disparity. Project Activities: 1. Develop a self-assessment process for correctional agencies to review their staffing, programming, classification, disciplinary, and work assignment processes for potential racial disparity. 2. Field test the process in four jurisdictions to assess the usability, relevance, and results of the assessment and then modify it accordingly. 3. Develop an instructional “handbook” will be developed to assist agencies in conducting and interpreting the racial disparity self-assessment process for their jurisdictions. 4. Distribute handbook and self-assessment checklist to ASCA membership; 5. Ask Agencies complete the self-assessment tool and submit the data to ASCA for compilation into a national report. 6

Project Activities continued: 6. Host focus groups among agencies with promising practices to identify potential strategies and draft sample policies/procedures to avoid disparities generated by correctional polices and procedures. 7. Prepare report to document: 1. Racial disparity assessment process; 2. Prevalence of racial disparity across agencies with respect to staffing, programming, classification, disciplinary, and work assignment processes; and 3. Strategies for eliminating racial disparity generated by correctional agency policies and procedures. 8. Disseminate handbook and national report nationally. Products: 1. Agency self-assessment checklist; 2. Handbook; and 3. Report documenting the checklist, field test findings, and key indicators of racial disparity. 7
