GRAND LYON Ongoing projects: Public transport (multimodal transport information system, common ticket system) Economy (support to industrial zones, execution of economic indicators at the metropolitan level) Logistics (logistic development strategies) Tourism (finding new opportunities in tourism; focus on the 20th century architecture) The Association finaces project studies, leads assistant task forces, covers initial project costs, etc.

METROPOLITAN AREAS IN GERMANY 11 metropolitan areas Established gradually since 1995 The biggest agglomeration: Rhein – Ruhr (11.5 mil. inhabitants) The concept of “metropolitan region “ (Metropolregion) was legally defined in Germany as early as in 1995, i.e. 15 years ago. It denotes an area of about 7,000 km2 with approximately 10 million inhabitants.

The main goal: Maintan the integral region to be economically and environmentally competitive with respect to quality of life The Association is headed by the chairman of regional board of representatives and full-time regional director. Region Stuttgart since 1974; in 1994/1995 the powers were significantly strengthened.

WHY THE COOPERATION AMONG THE MUNICIPALITIES IN THE BRNO AGGLOMERATION IS NECESSARY? The Brno agglomeration is a residential and economic system consisting of Brno and several tens of municipalities in the vicinity. Everyday social, economic, transport and other processes and bonds transcede their administrative borders. This agglomeration is a functional complex with differenciated tasks and roles of different urban units.

SUPPORT TO METROPOLITAN AREAS IN THE EU Solution of issues regarding the management of metropolitan areas (governance) from social, economic, environmental and territorial perspective Necessity of cooperation with all local stakeholders/partners Focus on uncontrolled expansion of towns General directoriate for regional politics – Cities of Tomorow The importance of metropolitan areas is grounded in the Lisbon Strategy It is expected that the support to metropolitan areas will be included in the comming EU 2020 programming period.
