Objective The students will understand key vocabulary necessary for calculating the mean, median and mode of a given set of data and calculate each.

WV CSO’s M.O Collect and analyze data using mean, median and mode to determine the best statistical measure.

Guiding Questions What is mean, median, and mode? How do you calculate mean, median, and mode?

Materials Nine index cards with numbers on them Computer Power Point Lesson Plan

VOCABULARY Data: Collected information Mean: The number found by adding all the data and dividing by the number of data. Often called the average. Median: The is the middle number. Mode: The is the data value that occurs most often.

Introduction Students will arrive to class and nine random students will be handed an index card with a number on it. The numbers will range from 1 to 15. Students will be asked to stand and order themselves from least to greatest. Students will be asked if they know the what data, mean, median and mode is and they will be given 1 minute think time as a group.

Procedure Class will discuss think time ideas of definition Class will view power point slide for mean, median and mode (stopping with the vocabulary slide). Class will identify the median of the student cards. Class will identify the mode of the student cards. Class will total amount of student cards, count the number of cards and divide to determine the mean.

Procedure Continued Students will be placed in group of five and survey group members for the month of their birthday. Groups will calculate the mean, median and mode of this data.

Closure Class will review vocabulary. Remind about vocabulary by using helpful hints power point slide. Review how to determine mean, median and mode.

Tips To Help You Remember The mode occurs most often. The median is in the middle. The mean is the average.

Assessment Students will be given a sheet of paper with two set of data. One set will include seven numbers and the other will include 10 numbers Students will sort each set individually from least to greatest. They will calculate the mean, median and mode.
