Stylitis-10+GSM 1.Via a GSM data call. 2.Via GPRS, using a cheap Dynamic IP SIM Card (via Symmetron’s Diameson Server) 3.Via GPRS, using a static IP SIM Card C. Stylitis-10+Ethernet/WiFi 1.Via Ethernet (local network or a static IP internet connection) 2.Via a dynamic IP internet connection (via Symmetron’s Diameson Server)

9. LOCAL COMMUNICATION 1.Locally RS-232 Serial Communication is available in two ways: Connect via a straight serial cable your computer COM port to the logger’s DCE port. Connect via a null modem serial cable your computer COM port to the logger’s DTE port. Stylitis-10

10. SATELLITE COMMUNICATION 2. Via Satellite RS-232 RS-232 Two satellite iridium modems are required: One connected to the computer’s COM port and one to the datalogger’s DTE port. Communication is achieved via satellite. Iridium modem Stylitis-10 Iridium modem

11. RF COMMUNICATION 3. Via RF modems RS-232 RS-232 Connect one RF Modem to Stylitis-10’s DTE port and one to the computer’s COM port. Achieve remote connections without a SIM card, for a limited distance (usually a few kilometers) between modems. Radio Modem Stylitis-10

12. COMMUNICATION VIA RF NETWORK 4. Measuring network via RF modems RS-232 Capability of communication with multiple dataloggers (one at a time), by using an RF modem for the computer (as a Master) and one for each datalogger (as Slaves). Again the distance between the Master modem and each Slave modem is limited (usually a few kilometers). Each datalogger modem is set to have a unique address. Communicate with one at a time. Stylitis-10 Radio Modem Stylitis-10 Radio Modem

5. Remote measuring network via RF modems Sym-o-net Internet RS COMMUNICATION VIA REMOTE RF NETWORK Stylitis-10 Radio Modems Diameson Gateway Same method as before, with the difference that the modem network can be remote, regarding the computer. The Master modem can be accessed via the GPRS network via Symmetron’s Sym-o-net modem. Sym-o-net can connect as a client to Diameson Gateway, Symmetron’s server software, via a dynamic IP SIM card. For more information about Diameson, see Chapter 15. Again the distance between the Master modem and each Slave modem is limited (usually a few kilometers). Virtual COM RS-232

14. GSM COMMUNICATION 6. Via a GSM data call RS-232 Connect a GSM modem to a computer COM port. Call the logger’s modem, provided that both modems’ SIM cards support GSM data calls. Stylitis-10+GSM GSM modem

15. GPRS COMMUNICATION VIA DYNAMIC IP SIM 7.Via GPRS, using a cheap Dynamic IP SIM Card (via Symmetron’s Diameson Server) Virtual COM Neither ADSL (static IP) connection is required for the logger nor expensive static IP SIM cards. A cheap dynamic IP GPRS SIM card is required. Low operation cost: The datalogger is permanently online, but only data exchange is charged. Devices (Dataloggers and Sym-o-nets) and Computers are connected as clients to Diameson Gateway, Symmetron’s server software. Symmetron’s Diameson is available for connections, but you can use your own Diameson, to manage your own dataloggers. Internet Diameson Gateway Stylitis-10+GSM

8. Via GPRS, using a static IP SIM Card Virtual COM A GPRS static IP SIM card is required. Again, only data exchange is charged. The datalogger acts like a server, and the computer connecting to it acts as its client. 16. GPRS COMMUNICATION VIA STATIC IP SIM Internet Stylitis-10+GSM

17. STATIC IP ETHERNET/WIFI COMMUNICATION 9. Via Ethernet/WiFi (local network or a static IP internet connection) Connect the datalogger to a LAN or to the internet An ADSL connection (a static IP) for the logger is required only to connect the logger to the internet. LAN/ internet ADSL Router Stylitis-10+ Ethernet/WiFi

18. DYNAMIC IP ETHERNET/WIFI COMMUNICATION 10. Via a dynamic IP internet connection (via Symmetron’s Diameson Server) Connect the datalogger to the internet. By using Diameson Gateway, Symmetron’s server software, you do not need a static IP ADSL connection. Internet Dynamic IP ADSL Router Stylitis-10+ Ethernet/WiFi Diameson Gateway

Opton is Stylitis-10’s free operating software. Start up with Opton, by creating Site folders and Connections. -Create one unique site folder for each datalogger. -In each site folder, multiple (different types of) connections can be created for the logger. The different connection types correspond to the communication methods, discussed before. -The connections created are saved as windows files, which are recognized by Opton in a folder interface, along with the compressed and decompressed data files (see Chapter 20), and setup files, ie logger settings (see next Chapter) saved in a file. Refer to the corresponding screen shot in Chapter 22. After achieving a connection, you can communicate with the logger. Besides changing its settings and download data, you can view some features, and specifically: -View the logger’s status: Instant parameters, such as the date and time, the current data file being recorded, the recording time remaining, etc. -View the instant channel values. -View an Online plot of the selected channels’ values. All samples are plotted (every second). Appropriate units appear on the plot. Refer to the corresponding screen shot in Chapter OPTON: STARTING UP AND VIEW

19. OPTON: SETUP Connect to the datalogger, via Opton, via one of the connections you created and modify its setup. CHANNEL SETTINGS Channel 1 is a counter channel, Ch2~7 can be set as analog ones or digital inputs, Ch8 can be both and Ch9 measures the logger’s battery. Besides that, channels 1~8 can also be set as digital outputs active low, to drive small relays. Set conditions regarding other channel values (inputs) to control the output state or set it manually. Stylitis-10 can also be upgraded to support digital bus (MODBUS RTU and SDI-12) channels. The settings of all channels can be changed in two ways: -Manually. Change settings manually: gain (for analog channels), level (for counter ones), type, Slope and Offset (for both ones), conditions (for digital outputs), address and register (for digital bus ones). -Via Opton’s Sensor Library. Instead of changing settings manually, select a specific measurement and a sensor, related to this measurement. Optionally, also change the measuring units. All settings are updated automatically. Refer to the corresponding screen shots in Chapter 22. REMAINING SETTINGS There are other settings to be adjusted, such as the recording interval (selectable from 1 sec to 1 hour) the logger’s site name, the data recording mode within the interval (only average values or average, min, max and sdv values) and the GPRS settings (APN, User Name, Password). More specifically, there is another option. You can receive SMSs and s: Receive the daily data file via (Available in both the GSM and the Ethernet version). Receive SMSs (GSM version): the average channel values every interval or every day, an alarm if a control output changes state, or a PhotoVoltaic (PV) alarm indicating faulty operation in a solar plant with multiple inverters. Alternatively, in dynamic IP GRPS connections (via Diameson server) and in the Ethernet version (also via Diameson), instead of SMS, data and alarms can be sent to a web database, Captum, to a specific user account and to this account’s . Interval data and alarms can be plotted in Captum, alarms can be shown in a table, while data statistics are presented in bar graphs per hour, per day of the month, per day of the week and per month. Refer to the corresponding screen shots in Chapter 23.

After writing the desired setup in the datalogger, enable/ disable data acquisition to create data files, stored in the 4MB memory. When enabling acquisition, a new file begins. Files are stored in the logger’s memory in compressed form. When downloaded, a compressed file is decompressed into a data file, which can be viewed via a text editor. Compressed and decompressed data files are stored in the logger’s site folder, as mentioned in Chapter 18. Data download can be achieved either manually or automatically via AutoConnect software (see Chapter 24). MANUAL DOWNLOAD There are 2 types of manual download: Download the most recent file. If Acquisition is ON, this is the current file. In this case, the current file is firstly closed (the next file begins) and then downloaded. Download one or more consecutive previous files, by typing their number. 20. OPTON: ACQUISITION AND DOWNLOAD

After downloading the data files in the site folder, you can manage them offline. Opton offers some useful tools for offline management and presentation: Plot. View the selected channels’ plot, in up to 3 graph groups. View values at a specific moment with the channel units. Refer to the corresponding screen shot in Chapter 23. Data File Processing. Check the integrity of a folder’s files, ie check for missing or duplicate records or if the interval is the same for all files. Statistics. Statistics of the file’s data can appear per hour, per day, per month and per year. Statistics include be the average values of the data (within the hour, day, month or year), the max, min or sdv values, or sum of all values. They are presented via a bar graph or a dot plot. Refer to the corresponding screen shot in Chapter 23. Export to WindRose/Excel/.CSV/.TAB file. Export a file’s data to an Excel, a comma delimited or a tab delimited file. Especially for wind data (speed and direction channels), you can export them to WindRose, the wind analysis software, add-in to the Microsoft Excel, which is manufactured by CRES and distributed by Symmetron. For WindRose, refer to the corresponding screen shot in Chapter OPTON: OFFLINE DATA MANAGEMENT

23. OPTON: SCREEN SHOTS (PART 2) Captum Statistics per weekday Data file plot Captum Plot Data file statistics per hour

24. AUTOCONNECT SOFTWARE As stated before, data files can be downloaded manually, via Opton, via any connection. However, data download, along with other actions as well, can be preformed automatically, in a regular basis, via the additional free software AutoConnect. The datalogger can perform a different action each weekday: -Download Data: All data files missing from the folder. -Download Status: Instant parameters, such as the current file, the recording time remaining, etc. -Download Current Values. Get the instant channel values. The selected action of a weekday can be performed once a day at a specific selected time, or infinite connections can be made that weekday every as many minutes as you wish. Besides editing the auto connections (like in Opton) via AutoConnect’s interface, you can: -View a list of all your automatic connections and execute one or more manually. -Check each connection’s latest status, ie if it succeeded, or failed and why. -View the date and time of last connection and last successful download for each one.

25. MAIN APPLICATIONS AND CONCLUSION Stylitis-10 could be used in: Electrical Measurements. Weather stations. Wind energy assessment. Solar plant monitoring and faulty operation detection via alarm. Remote control of relays. Fire prevention networks. …and many more Summing up, its main advantages are: Combination of analog and digital bus channels in a competitive price. Variety of communication methods. Free operating and automatic connection software. Combination of input channels with control outputs. Portability, thanks to its small size. Alarm and data SMS and data s sent to a specified recipient. Data and alarms sent to a web database, accessed via your personal account.
