DESSC Mission and History o Mission: Supporting policies that drive sustainable development/growth by advancing intelligent transportation systems, building energy management systems, smart logistics, smart grid, and other other ICT-enabled solutions. o History: 2008 – launched as the Digital Energy Solutions Campaign; ITI agreed to host DESC; 2012 – Became DESSC, better reflecting the potential role of ICT solutions in water management.

Potential impacts from ICT o Large Savings o Smarter 2020: The Role of ICT in Driving a Sustainable Future (GeSI, 2012): o 16.5% cut globally in GHG by 2020 o $1.9 trillion in savings o A Defining Framework for Intelligent Efficiency (ACEEE, 2012) o 12-22% cut in energy use in U.S. o Tens to hundreds of billions in savings o Leading by Example 2.0 (C2ES, 2013) o 24% reduction in federal GHG emissions o $5 billion in energy savings through 2020 o At Low Costs o ICT sector GHG emissions increase from 1.3% to 2.3% in 2020 while saving 7 times that amount (GESI, 2012)
Projects – C2ES Research/Reports o Federal agencies are executing important ICT-enabled solutions, but often without proper attention, reward, nor scorecarding. o Eight case studies featured in “Leading by Example: Using Information and Communication Technologies to Achieve Federal Sustainability Goals.” o Policy obstacles and recommendations in “Leading by Example 2.0: How Information and Communication Technologies Help Federal Agencies Meet Sustainability Goals”
Projects -- ISEP o In June 2012, at Rio+20, DESSC, The Climate Group, the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions (C2ES) and the UN Foundation announced a commitment in support of the Sustainable Energy for All (SE4All) initiative, the “ICTs for Sustainable Energy Partnership” (ISEP). o ISEP is focused on realizing the ICT industry’s potential in enabling the goals of the UN’s SE4All initiative. o The initiative is currently quite active in Europe, and we are hopeful of significant activity in 2014 in India; The Climate Group serves as the secretariat.
Projects -- Chesapeake Conservancy o The Conservancy project promotes water quality in healthy watersheds using ICT to identify and protect naturally high functioning landscape features (NHFLFs). o Three phases, all funded in whole or in part by DESSC. o Phase I – researched best practices, and issued report, “The Emerging Role of Technology in Precision Conservation.” o Phase 2 – conducted landscape analysis of the Chester and Choptank River watersheds. Formal report due by Xmas. o Phase 3– proposal for 2014 is to: create web-based tools, work with partner orgs to use the tools and data, help define standards and methods, and more.
Projects – CIE/DESSC MOU o At the US-China 4 th Annual Energy Efficiency Forum, DESSC signed an MOU with the Chinese Institute for Electronics. o The MOU is to enable future cooperation in promoting energy efficiency via ICT. Activities are to include: o Guides on best practices; o Reports on ICT promoting low-carbon economic development; o Symposia and conferences; o Industry policy and information exchanges. o Considering a large conference in Beijing next fall.
Projects – President’s Climate Change Plan o ICT can help advance the Plan’s objectives o Federal leadership in reducing GHGs o Expanding the use of ESPCs, and o Enhancing resilience to climate change o Climate plan highlights need to enhance resilience and calls for a toolkit and a climate data Initiative. o Through real-time monitoring and optimization, ICT offers potential to enhance nation’s resilience (eg, water efficiencies; utility outages; early warning systems; and improved modeling/mapping of risks.
