GRADED BELLWORK Think back to our discussion about air pollution last class and answer the following question: Write at least 1 paragraph. You will turn it in. Question: Why is it so difficult to effectively reduce air pollution in urban areas?

Air Pollution Health Effects and More...

Objectives In this lesson, students will… 1)Predict and discuss short and long term health effects of air pollution 2)Learn about sources of indoor air pollution 3)Relate personal experiences with noise and light pollution and discuss effects

How is Air Pollution Harmful? (TPS) What do you think are some specific health problems that can result from air pollution? Air pollution levels can cause immediate health problems: ●Makes lungs work harder to supply oxygen ●Permanently damages respiratory cells ●Aggravates conditions such as asthma or allergies epa.gov, 2014

Long Term Health Effects Air pollution also causes long term problems… ●Development of respiratory conditions o Asthma, allergies, bronchitis, cancer, etc. ●Loss of lung capacity ●Shortened life span epa.gov, 2014

Asthma asthma - swelling of the airways of the lungs

Indoor Air Pollution All pollution does not only occur outdoors. Many types of pollution occurs inside buildings. Examples? ●Asbestos ●Mold ●Household/industrial chemicals

Reducing Indoor Air Pollution (TPS) Make sure to air out rooms, especially if using gaseous chemicals Maintain clean ventilation system Use safe building materials (no asbestos!)

Asbestos asbestos - used as an insulator in older buildings Banned by the U.S. government in the 1970s because it was found to cause serious lung damage Billions of dollars were spent replacing asbestos, especially in school buildings

Noise Pollution noise pollution - any unwanted sound Is annoying and can damage hearing Examples?

Common Noises 85 dB is the threshold for potential hearing damage, especially if exposed for a long period of time

Light Pollution Does not present a direct hazard to health, but still presents an environmental problem How?

Light Pollution Diminishes view of sky Wastes energy

Creative Writing Assignment Write a 1+ page story about an experience with noise and/or light pollution. Make sure your story also explains why noise/light pollution have negative effects. Due tomorrow at beginning of class!
