Details of the scheme… The Guggenheim museums had helped transform Bilbao’s economy and put the city on the international map. Received 3.5 million visitors since opening. Opened in 1997 Directly contributed 318 million pounds of economic benefits. 5.7 million has been spent inside the museum, as well as 31.8 million on the accommodation, 25.4 on catering, 10 million on shopping, 7 million on transport and 4.7 on leisure.

Evaluation The Guggenheim Museums has been the main attraction for the city of Bilbao, attracting around 1 million visitors each year. It has catalysed the regeneration of the Bilbao area, since its decline of industry in 1970s and 1980s, leading to high unemployment. This flagship project has lead to transport regeneration with new tram and bus lines. We feel it has helped generated economic benefits to the surrounding area. It has gained global recognition, bring 50% of visitors are foreigners.
