Homebrewing for fun AND competition

Why not compete? "I don't want to pay for someone else to drink my beer !" "I don't brew to style, nor do I want to." "Entering competitions takes a lot of time and effort." "My beer isn't very good."

"I don't want to pay for someone else to drink my beer !" Why this is a bad excuse: Paying for feedback (& chance for prizes/recognition) Judges work very hard to provide information and clues that might help with diagnosing and IMPROVING your beer Shipping costs are sometimes offset by the club. Members also occasionally "car pool" entries to regional destinations

"I don't brew to style, nor do I want to." Why this is a bad excuse: Whether you like it or not... you ARE brewing to some style, you just might not be aware of what style. (your fellow club members can help!) BJCP has styles, in particular Cat 23, "Specialty Beer," which accepts most anything you can explain... if it's good and not to any other style, you can still enter here!

"Entering competitions takes a lot of time and effort." Why this is a bad excuse: Your brew day takes MUCH longer than bottling and shipping for competition. You've already taken the effort to make a great beer, so why not try to get something out of it!

"My beer isn't very good." Why this is a bad excuse: You really don't know if your beer isn't good unless you've entered a couple competitions for thorough feedback. Brewers have been surprised in the past with their efforts, when a beer has done much better than expected.

How to get started with competing Get started with competing! Just try it out... you might really like it. Bring your beer to club meetings for feedback on improving your beers. We have a few outstanding competitors who can and want to help you out!
