A PERSONAL LECTURE CAPTURE SOLUTION: LESSONS LEARNED John Miko IACBE ANNUAL CONFERENCE BALTIMORE, MD

Why and how did I get here? I have a strong background in technology and have always been a technophile. Have been recording narrated Powerpoint lectures for online classes for some time. Started recording computer tutorials for face- to-face classes with some success. Saw PANOPTO, an enterprise lecture capture solution, presented at a conference. 2

Why and how did I get here? Saw Needs Student-athletes Over 75% in SFU School of Business On a given class day can be over 300+ hours of missed instruction time Working adults ESL students Various learning styles and speeds double-header students My time repurposing and repackaging 3

What is Lecture Capture? Allows students to download or watch pre- recorded audio and/or video lectures. These recordings are usually of live face-to-face classes. “Podcasting” – iPOD - audio only - subscription element with RSS BB Collaborate recordings Enterprise level players – Panopto, Tegrity, Extron, others tend to be expensive but smoother integration, indexing, some can be livestreamed (Meerkat) 4

Hardware Tools that I use Lenovo Helix Hybrid Touchscreen Tablet/Laptop Typical Laptop mode for Powerpoint narration, computer software tutorials, and talking head video Use tablet mode with stencil to capture “board work” 5

Hardware Tools that I use YETI USB Microphone Around $100 on Amazon Excellent at capturing audio I can move around room Captures student questions Very sensitive to all noises Debated using lavalier mic 6

Hardware Tools that I use “Smart” classroom VGA laptop and Audio cabling connection and classroom project Logitech slide advancer/pointer 7

Software Tools that I Use Screencast-O-Matic Free version (up to 15 minutes) Pro version ($15 annually) 8

9

Software Tools that I Use Youtube Open High Familiarity and Availability Unlimited Space (request for longer than 15 minutes) Multiple Channels per account 10

Software Tools that I Use TEACH Act : Copyright Law Youtube Privacy Options Public Unlisted Private A private video can only be seen by you and the users you select. The video won’t appear on your channel or search results and will be invisible to other users. You need to link your channel with Google+ in order to share a private video with other users. If your channel is connected to Google+, you’ll see a field under the “Privacy Settings” drop-down menu where you can add the profiles or addresses of the people with whom you’d like to share your video. They’ll need a Google account to view your video. You can also share your videos with Google+ circles. 11

Software Tools that I Use Window Journal or Powerpoint Simple note-taking application included on Windows 7 and above Does OCR if so inclined Can save as *.jnt (Windows Journal Note) Export as a *.tiff file 12

Statistics Average video views: 6.38 Students who utilize it: 65% Average videos watched by students: 6.9 Number of Youtube hours per class (3 credits) : approximately 26 hours 13

Student Comments “I like that I can go back if I do not understand something and see it again” “I actually felt like I was in class even though I missed it for travel” “I didn’t worry so much about taking everything down in my notes because I knew I could get it later” 14

Student Comments “I think this is a fantastic tool. I always stressed when I had to miss class but this took that away from me.” “I like to move at my own pace and this works for me.” 15

Student Comments “I wish it was indexed somehow” “Dr. Miko should set up a Youtube channel for each class that I can subscribe to” 16

Lessons Learned (so far) Some students really like it and it becomes an expectation Attendance issues? Took me sometime to be comfortable with it and, like all technology, it can fail. Privacy issues? Extra time in post-production/cataloging Technical issues: screen resolution, SOM, 17

Lessons Learned (so far) Because it is a live class, it is not as smooth as video tutorials that I record for online classes. Have actually used it to review a class session and critique myself. Could likely do the same for others. Perhaps include in professional portfolios? Not a perfect solution, but the baseline was somewhere between 0 and “hey, did we do anything in class today?” 18
