CogLab Experiments You can access CogLab from the Psych 355 course website: http://faculty.washington.edu/jmiyamot/p355/p355-set.htm or from https://coglab.cengage.com/index.shtml Demonstrate the ‘word superiority’ experiment. Explain how to get a CogLab ID and password. Discuss issue of buying a used textbook. Display the Catalyst questionnaire for Week 1 of Psych 355 FAQ’s About the Coglab Access Code & Textbook Psych 355, Miyamoto, Spr '15

FAQ's About the Textbook & CogLab 4th edition of the textbook is probably 90% the same as the 3rd edition, but the 10% difference may be important on some quizzes or exams. We assume that students have read the material in the 4th edition. What you need for Psych 355: 4th edition of the Goldstein textbook. An access code (a.k.a. "registration code") for the Coglab website. How to Get an Access Code for Coglab Psych 355, Miyamoto, Spr '15

FAQ's About the CogLab Access Code The access code comes with the Goldstein textbook in the bundle that is sold by the University Bookstore – but on the internet, some versions of the Goldstein textbook do not come with an access code. If you have a used 4th edition of the textbook, you can buy an ebook version of the Coglab manual including access code for $48.00 + tax at CengageBrain.com. Several students can share a Coglabs account. See GoPost message board for contacting students who want to share an access code. Link to GoPost is on the Psych 355 website. Grading Psych 355, Miyamoto, Spr '15

Grading Scheme Date % Grade Labs & Catalyst Questionnaires Assigned on 1st lecture day of the week. Due by 5 pm on Monday of the following week. 5 Quizzes Weekly on 1st lecture day 12 Midterm Exam I Monday April 20 (wrongly stated as “April 30” in an earlier version of this slide) 25 Midterm Exam II Monday May 18 Final Exam Wednesday June 10 2:30 - 4:20 pm in MGH 389 33 Info About Exams and Grading Psych 355, Miyamoto, Spr '15

INFORMATION ABOUT EXAMINATIONS AND GRADING: I will drop your lowest quiz score. If you must miss a quiz or a midterm exam, contact the instructor by telephone, or email BEFORE the quiz or exam in order to get permission to take a make up quiz or exam. Because we post answer keys for exams by Friday on the internet, we cannot let students take a late exam after Thursday of the week on which it is given. Exception: If you are sick for an entire week, you can receive a different exam from the rest of the class provided you let us know ASAP that you are sick. This make-up exam will be an essay exam. More Info re Exams & Grading Psych 355, Miyamoto, Spr '15

INFORMATION ABOUT EXAMINATIONS AND GRADING: The midterm exams and the quizzes are not cumulative. The final examination is cumulative. Quiz and exam questions are based on material in (i) the textbook; (ii) lectures; (iii) sections; (iv) labs. You are responsible for all of the assigned reading material even if it was not covered in lecture. You will often be asked to do a lab before you have heard a lecture or read about the relevant experiments. Do not worry about this. The labs will be graded very leniently. You need to show that you know what happened in the experiment, but not the theory behind it. More Info re Grading Psych 355, Miyamoto, Spr '15

More Info re Grading I grade on a curve but the curve is based on the overall performance of the class, so I can’t tell you before the end of the quarter what you will need to score to get a particular grade. Example: Typical class Mean final grade = 3.2 Number of 4.0’s = 3 Number of flunk (< 0.7) = 0 Example: Very good class Mean final grade = 3.4 Number of 4.0’s = 5 Number of flunk (< 0.7) = 0 Example: Very bad class Mean final grade = 2.8 Number of 4.0’s = 1 Number of flunk (< 0.7) = 3 Is this grading policy fair? Monday, March 30, 2015: The Lecture Ended Here Psych 355, Miyamoto, Spr '15

More Questions It’s ok to go to a different section from the one you are enrolled in, BUT if we run out of room in a section, we will restricted attendance to people who are actually enrolled in the section. I will be giving add codes to students on the waiting list for Psych 355 as soon as other students drop the course. Comment: During this quarter (Spr '15), a few additional students will get add codes. Course Outline: Weeks 1 - 5 Psych 355, Miyamoto, Spr '15
