Supporting community action on HIV & AIDs and TB KANCO Kenya AIDS NGO’s Consortium (KANCO) is a national network membership of non- governmental organizations (NGOs), community based organizations (CBOs) and faith-based organizations (FBOs) involved in or that have interest in HIV & AIDS and TB activities in Kenya and the Linking Organisation (LO)for the International HIV/AIDS Alliance.

Supporting community action on HIV & AIDs and TB To provide leadership, collaboration and enhance capacity among CSOs and other stakeholders to respond to HIV & AIDS and TB at the community level Mission

Supporting community action on HIV & AIDs and TB Background Mapping  In 2009 KANCO initiated a process of mapping CSO AIDS service providers across the country  Currently 350 AIDS service CSO’s have been mapped showing their location and the type of services they provide.

Supporting community action on HIV & AIDs and TB Challenges  Low access to internet connectivity in rural areas  Local CBO’s without ICT facilities unable to upload their profiles

Supporting community action on HIV & AIDs and TB Looking to the future… Information displayed will include:  Bulk export  Directory  County profiles  SMS for referrals to services on the map  Receive SMS alerts as new info in your area added to map  Submit feedback on services via SMS

Supporting community action on HIV & AIDs and TB Bulk SMS  With the growing number of members KANCO sought innovative communication tools one of which is the bulk SMS  This is a tool where information can be communicated to many partners at the same time

Supporting community action on HIV & AIDs and TB  Faster to communicate and respond  SMS is cheaper in sending mass bulk messages.  It’s timeless. The bulk SMS is a novel form of media communication.  It’s not bound by geographic coverage- flexible. You can send bulk SMS anytime anywhere.  It’s targeted. The bulk SMS is targeted to campaigning, advocacy, networking and information sharing, disseminating resources and facilitating discussions. Benefits of Bulk SMS

Supporting community action on HIV & AIDs and TB Conclusion  Despite the challenges be faced because of infrastructural constraints, applying ICT as a tool, in mainstreaming HIV/AIDS can be a cost- effective solution to increasing the information reach. This would contribute to the global theme of Zero New Infections, Zero AIDS-related Deaths and Zero Discrimination.
