Unit 5 Word stress patterns

every English word has a stress pattern Sss: president sSs: musician

Stress in two syllable words Except for verbs, two syllable words are stressed on the first syllable 90% of the time. Reminder: the stressed syllable is loud and clear, and the unstressed syllable is often times the schwa

Words that end with –tion, -sion, and cian These words sounds all all pronounced as “shun” For these words, the stressed syllable comes just before the “shun” Practice! (D)

E: -ic, -ical Listen to these words. What is the stress rule? -ic?

F: two clear vowels together When two vowels are next to each other, they are two different syllables, and both of them are clear.

Nouns and verbs: same word, different stress Many words are both nouns and verbs. Insult That is an insult! Don’t insult me! What is the stress rule? The verb is usually stressed on the second syllable.
