Sit properly in chairs Be safe in classroom

Definition When you are safe by sitting properly in chairs you maintain all four chair legs on the floor. You sit face forward with your back to the back of the chair. If you are sitting in a chair with wheels, you sit still unless it is time to move, so that the chair doesn’t move and you fall out.

Teacher Model When I am safe by sitting properly in chairs, I place my feet on the floor in front of my body. I make sure to have “all four on the floor.” My back can rest lightly on the back of my chair.

Example: Kim sits in a chair with a desk top attached. She sits facing forward with her feet on the floor.

Non-example: Melinda sits down in a chair and starts to tip it back by balancing on the back two legs and having the front two legs off the ground. Melinda loses her balance, and she and the chair fall.

Example: Mallory sits in a chair with wheels. She places her feet on the floor and sits still so she won’t roll.

Practice in setting Stand up and then sit down properly.

Teachers Give positive feedback to students who are sitting properly in their chairs.
