Promoting an Alcohol Free Lifestyle Lesson Plan Amanda Drews and Brittany Lane

Standards National Health Education Standard 2: Students will analyze the influence of family, peers, culture, media, technology, and other factors on health behaviors. 6.2.9 Identify how some health choices influence unhealthy behaviors.

INTASC Standard Standard #8 Instructional Strategies The teacher understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies to encourage learners to develop deep understanding of content areas and their connections, and to build skills to apply knowledge in meaningful ways. Description: For this assignment, we have developed a Health lesson plan that focuses on promoting an alcohol free lifestyle. Within this lesson plan we have included and detailed the standards, student objectives, activities and how the students will be assessed. Rationale: To demonstrate my understanding of Learning Differences, I have included my Health Lesson Plan because it highlights my ability to adapt instruction to the needs of individuals by providing accommodations, as well as including a role play and skit for the students to create for groups of learners.  During the role play, students are engaged in assessing their progress of the objectives.  During the lesson plan, the teacher is also playing the roles of an instructor, facilitator, and audience member.  This lesson plan shows my ability to engage learners in meaningful tasks and problem solving if they are offered alcohol, while involving all learners.

Objectives 6th grade; 25 minutes Equipment: enough note cards for class; picture of brain; facts about alcohol use Students will: -be able to identify reasons why people choose to drink alcohol -understand the influence and dangers of alcohol use - Understand the effects that alcohol has on the brain -develop ways to “say no” to alcohol

Reasons Why People Drink: Intro Activity Reasons Why People Drink: Availability of alcohol Family/Environment Peer Pressure Media Pressure

Activity Write down one or two ways to have fun, or relieve stress, that does not include alcohol. “Why drink when we could…” Class discussion/Share ideas with class Compile list

Assessment Have the students form small groups Each group must act out a skit that displays all 4 of the student objectives points criteria 4 All four objectives are displayed 3 Three objectives are displayed 2 Two objectives are displayed 1 One objective is displayed None of the objectives are displayed

Accommodations -The skit that the students put together is a great accommodation for kinesthetic learners -Handouts will be passed out to accommodate the visual learners

Safety Concerns Inform the students to make skits that are not dangerous so no one will get hurt. while practicing the skits there is to be no horse playing.
