Shemot/Exodus 1:1 – 6:1 “Moses Called to Guide Israel”

 A "new pharaoh" over Egypt  Did not acknowledge Joseph's contributions to save Egypt

 The Jewish people started to grow in numbers.  The Pharaoh very afraid  Jewish people became slaves.  The Egyptians were very mean to the Jewish people.

 The Jewish people families grew larger.  The Pharaoh ordered the Jewish boys babies killed.

 Amram and Jochebed married.  They had three children named Miriam, Aaron and Moses.  Moses was hidden and not thrown the baby Moses into the Nile River.  Placed in a basket among the reeds of the Nile.

 Pharaoh's daughter found Moses in the ark among the reeds.  She adopted him.  Miriam offered to find someone to help take care of the baby.

 Moses became a prince of Egypt.  Moses went to visit the Jewish people.  He noticed an Egyptian overseer beating a Jewish person.

 Moses wanted to protect the Jewish person getting beaten  He killed the Egyptian hid the body in the sand.  The following day, Moses attempted to keep two Jewish people from fighting.  “Who made you a prince and judge over us?”

 Moses ran away from Egypt  He moved to a country called Midian.  He married and had two sons.  He was a shepherd.

 One day when Moses was tending sheep in the desert.  He noticed a bush that was on fire but did not burn up.  The LORD spoke to Moses out of the burning bush.

 God called Moses to guide the Jewish people.  Moses said he could not do it because he could not speak very good.  God gave him three miracles so the Jewish people would believe him.  Moses told his father- in- law that he was going back to Egypt.

 Moses told Aaron about their mission.  Moses and Aaron met with the Jewish leaders  The Jewish people heard Aaron's speech and saw the miracles Moses performed  They believed that the LORD had answered their prayers.

 Moses and Aaron visited Pharaoh  Pharaoh became angry and treated the Jewish people very badly.  Moses and Aaron were blamed for the bad situation.  The would see the LORD work to save them from slavery.

Shem – “Name” HaShem – “The NAME” A replacement for saying God’s special and unspeakable name.

 God did not forget his promises to Israel.  The Jewish people became slaves in Egypt.  The events of Moses’ life prepared him for his task to lead Israel out of Egypt.
