ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS Adventures in Time and Place by Viona Van Hoose

ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS My name is Viona Van Hoose. I teach at Jefferson Middle School in Oceanside, California. I teach a Language Arts/Social Studies Core class. My web site is This is an introductory research project on Ancient Civilizations in which students look for artifacts on selected web sites in order to become familiar with the elements that make up a culture.

ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS EXPECTATIONS To put a lesson on the web site To make the lesson standards based To learn PowerPoint, Excel, and Netscape Composer To teach students to use the web site lesson

ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS Outcomes I learned the following: Create a web site in Netscape Composer Graph using Excel Link pages and projects Downloading and uploading

ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS SUCCESSES Students excited Students willing to complete work High interest in topic Lesson met standards Students are more at ease using computers

ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS Shortcomings Not enough available computers Few internet access locations Too much time needed for students to type Lack of student knowledge of general computer skills

ANCIENT CIVILIZATONS Students improved from pretest to post-test significantly.

ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS This line graph again shows my students’ success in using the web based lesson.

ANCIENT CIVILIZATONS Summary- Reflections Completing this project helped me better understand multiple elements of technology in order to enhance the learning of my students. I found that middle school students easily engage with technology and that the learning is on both sides. As I taught my students, I learned alongside. Having the right equipment and excess to the internet is the key to using this form of teaching. Without ready support it can be frustrating.

ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS I have learned a lot from this project, but can still learn a lot more. I hope to continue increasing my knowledge as I create future lessons.

ANCIENT CIVILIZATONS The following slides will introduce you to the lesson. Enjoy.
