Thomas Hoover Associate Vice Chancellor and Chief Information Officer Desktop Virtualization
Virtual Desktop Initiative at UTC What is desktop virtualization? A thin client device can be used instead of a full size computer. The thin client remotely connects to a server and displays the Windows 7 operating system on the thin client device connected to a monitor. Thin Client Device Why desktop virtualization? Less money (48% cheaper than PC) Less energy ( more than 89% more energy efficient) Easier to manage and maintain Most people are just using Microsoft Office products and surfing the web
Virtual Desktop Initiative at UTC Cost Containment Strategy - Reducing desktop costs allow IT to redirect money to classroom technology and address greater IT needs -Better utilization of limited resources -Less staff can manage more machines -Total cost per device $ (This includes device, license, and servers) -Savings per device versus a PC $567.17
