BIOGRAPHY Born in Vienna in 1934 Studied at the Academy of Graphic Arts in Vienna, the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago and the University of California at Berkeley Established private practice in Vienna in 1964 From 1963 – 1976 has been professor at Washington University in St.Louis and Academy of Fine Arts in Dusseldorf
From 1976 he was professor of "Universität für angewandte Kunst“,Vienna In 1960s he was able to meet and study with architects like Mies Van der Rohe, FrankLloyd Wright and Richard Neutra Awarded Pritzker Prize in 1985
His architecture was based intimately on Vienna’s culture and also his studies in America Post –Modern Architect Hollein actively criticized Functionalism through speeches, writings, drawings and projects “ Everything is Architecture” Used this theory to defy the strict concept of Functionalism PHILOSOPHY

RETTI CANDLE SHOP, VIENNA
His first project after setting up his practice Was completed in 1966 Situated in the shopping center in Vienna Winner of 1966 Reynolds Memorial Award even though it was one of the smallest of the projects considered by the jury RETTI CANDLE SHOP
High-tech look is achieved by the sheet aluminium façade With back to back ‘R’s for the doorway “Attention is not drawn to the shop by gaudy neon signs or large, stuffed full shop windows but through its architecture” Mechanical and lighting fixtures are integral part of the design

Showroom Customer is confronted directly with the products for sale There are no counters acting as barriers After passing through the showroom he enters the storage room, which also is the sales area Polished and anodized aluminium in the interior

Post Modern building Situated in Stephansplatz in Vienna Built overlooking the St. Stephens Cathedral Was completed in 1980 The building houses retail, office and restaurant spaces HAAS HAUS
Controversial because it was in contrast to the surrounding historical architecture of Vienna
