Word Choice because words rule!!!

Writing Prompt Choose one of the topics below and write a descriptive essay (2 - 3 paragraphs) describing the topic: Favorite foodBirthday Party Messy RoomLost and scared SnowstormTyphoon Getting hurtHealthy Eating Embarrassing MomentBike riding

Writing Prompt Write about a time that something unique or special happened to you. Underline your verbs; Alter five of your verbs, substituting strong verbs in place of weak ones.

Dead Verbs - “GET” out of here! Rewrite the sentences using a “better” verb. He got up at seven. He got his own breakfast. He got cereal on his shirt. He got a towel from the sink. He got his backpack. He hurried to get done with his homework. He got his coat and got to school just in time.

Put “put” away! Rewrite these sentences using “better” verbs My mom put me in charge of cleaning my room. I put the clean clothes in the basket. As I put away my games, I noticed one was cracked. I put it in the trash. I put all my school papers into a binder. I put my hands on my hips and smiled at the completed job.

“Make” a better verb choice! Rewrite these sentences using a “better” verb My mom told me to make lunch for the family. I made ham and cheese sandwiches. I made them with kawaii bento decorations from the 100Y. Also, I made them into shapes. I thought I needed to make 10 sandwiches. But I was having so much fun, I made too many!

Writing with Active Verbs Task: your group is to write a piece using as many of the action verbs listed below, but without using any adverbs (adverbs modify verbs, for example in the sentence “He walked slowly.” Slowly is the adverb because it describes the verb). List of active verbs: jump, fly, eat, sting, approach, think, kiss, hover, dial, smooth, sneeze, write, empty, and rehearse. (Your verbs can be in any tense or form: fly, flies, flying, flew, and flown)

Scoring Read your stories to another group Score each other 1pt for each active verb used; deduct a point for each adverb used. Highest points: wins (the honor of knowing you won)
