School of Political Science and International Studies About the School The School of Political Science and International Studies is the biggest political science department in Australia. We have a strong research and teaching performance record and are consistently among the top three schools in Australia. In the most recent national Excellence in Research Assessment Exercise (2012), POLSIS research was judged as “well above world standard”, achieving the maximum score of 5 out of 5. In the last QS World University survey, we were ranked in the top 50 in the world. We have 35 plus fulltime teaching and support staff and around 30 part time Around 80 Phd and 300 Master students Nearly 3000 undergraduate students The School of Political Science and International Studies is part of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences We are home to the Asia-Pacific Centre for the Responsibility to Protect. School of Political Science and International Studies Studying (politics) at University Subjects are called courses You may not have classes every day but you will have a reading program to complete A typical course at POLSIS involves a 2 hour lecture and a 1 hour tutorial each week (enrol for tutorials via si-net) Attendance at tutorials may be required but attendance at lectures is not generally policed (POLS1101 an exception) Tutorial class sizes are quite small but there can be 300 in a lecture – don’t be overwhelmed Courses in 2 nd and 3 rd year tend to be more specialized and numbers enrolled are smaller
