 Rio de Janerio is a city located in Brazil.  Rio is the capital city of the State of Rio de Janerio.  Rio de Janerio is the second largest city of Brazil and the third largest metropolitan area and agglomeration in South America.

 Rio de Janeiro, was discovered on January 1, 1502 by Portuguese navigators who mistook the entrance of Guanabara Bay for the mouth of a river (Rio).  Sixty-three years later, on March 1, 1565, the city of Rio de Janeiro was officially founded by the Portuguese.

 Rio de Janerio is the 26 th largest city in the world with a population of 6,093, 472 as of  It is considered one of the main tourist destinations in the Southern Hemisphere and is famous for its beaches, Carnaval celebration, and various landmarks such as the statue of Christ the Redeemer.  Rio receives about 2.8 millions visitors per year.

 The International Olympics Committee selected Rio de Janerio to be the location of the 2016 Summer Olympics. It will be the first South America city to ever host the Olympics.
