Press Menu button once to open Map Setup. Set desired map display preferences. Use Map to visually monitor track log collection. Download Garmin MapSource maps for greater receiver map detail. Receiver Operation Button Layout Update Almanac Datum Waypoint Naming Convention GPS for Fire Management Pocket Guide for the Garmin GPSMAP 76S Receiver Setup Main Menu From any page, press Menu button twice. To set up receiver, toggle to Setup, press Enter button once. Proceed through setup pages and change settings as needed. Monitor power and memory use from Main Menu. If working in a new location, or the age of the receiver’s almanac is not known, update it by placing the receiver in a location with a clear view of the sky for up to 15 minutes after receiver acquires the first satellite signal. Almanac is automatically updated whenever the receiver is in use. Setup Page Map Page Electronic Compass Page Use Setup page to customize the way page information is displayed. Go to Location tab to set correct datum and coordinate system (shown is NWCG GPS standard). Front When there is a change in datum, coordinate values change for all points on the ground. If using GPS receiver with a map, set receiver datum to match map datum. If entering position or waypoint coordinates from other sources (including GIS), set receiver datum to match the datum of the source coordinates prior to inputting into a GPS receiver. Lamp: Turn receiver on; adjust backlight/contrast. NAV: Go to navigation page; man overboard. ZOOM: Map page zoom in or out. PAGE: Advance to next page. Turn compass on/off. MENU: Once to open active page menu; twice to open Main Menu. ENTER: Selects a menu option. Mark waypoint. QUIT: Exit any menu. Return to previous page. Note: when printing guide, delete everything on this page that is outside of black line prior to printing. * Red lines represent text margins only and should be deleted prior to printing. Press Menu button once to open Compass Setup menu. Select Calibrate Compass to calibrate the compass (do this regularly to maintain compass accuracy). Symbol indicates electronic compass is on (red arrow). Select Main Menu, Setup, Location tab to set compass North Reference to True, Magnetic, Grid or User. From any page press and hold Page button to turn compass on or off at any time. Caution: Compass on consumes more battery power. * B – Blasted, D – Dozer, H – Hand, W – Wet ** M – Mine Shaft, S – Snag, W – Well *** F – Fence, R – Road, W – Water Example: DBXY = X - Y division break. Always operate receiver in either “3D GPS Location” or “3D Differential” mode (if receiving WAAS signal). Avoid using receiver in 2D mode due to reduced position accuracy. Note receiver mode GPS Information Page information on the mission metadata form.

Select Average Location and press Enter button once. Averaging begins automatically. Track Log Setup Toggle to select Tracks from Main Menu list. Press Enter button to open Tracks page menu. Press Menu button to open Tracks menu. Download active log and all saved tracks prior to clearing memory. Clear Active Log and any saved Tracks and Points to empty memory cache. Select Setup Track Log and press Enter button once. Note Measurement Count for each waypoint on metadata form. Select and press Save when done. Positions will be averaged into a single waypoint. Average waypoint for a minimum of 30 positions (collection rate is one second per position). The NWCG GPS datum standard is NAD83 (same as WGS84) and lat/long coordinate system (degrees, minutes and seconds). Briefing Plan mission to achieve the objectives. Are mission logistics in place to effectively complete the mission? Is delivered GPS data or product format understood? Equipment Select appropriate GPS receiver for the mission. Use an external antenna whenever possible. Have adequate battery supply or power source. Take paper map and compass. Take notebook and pencils. Take GPS metadata form. Prepare GPS receiver Set correct datum and coordinate system to NWCG (see above) or incident standard. Update receiver almanac for the local area. Clear memory: download and delete waypoints, active log and saved tracks if not needed for next mission. Set up Track Log recording interval based on method of travel, speed, and size of area to be mapped. Check wires, connections and power source. Verify all GPS settings are correct prior to mission. Aerial mapping mission Brief pilot on mission prior to takeoff. Ensure reliable external antenna connection. Carry spare GPS receiver and extra batteries. Create Averaged Position Waypoint Mark New Waypoint Mission Checklist Collect Track Log Press and hold Enter button to create a new waypoint. Do not edit date/time field (this information is needed for GIS). Select Ok and press Enter button to save waypoint. Or, press Menu button once to access waypoint options menu. Approximate log times (with empty Track Log): One second interval: 2 hours, 42 minutes log time. Three second interval: 8 hours, 18 minutes log time. Five second interval: 13 hours, 48 minutes log time. Suggested log rates (varies by speed of travel): Helicopter: second log interval. Vehicle: second log interval. Walking: second log interval. Logging interval can be changed at any time while collecting a track log. To start collecting an active track log, set Recording to Stop When Full. Press Enter button to select. Don’t select Wrap When Full. To pause during logging, set Recording to Off. When mapping is complete, either turn receiver off or set Recording to Off. Tracks page displays percentage of memory used. Monitor memory usage to ensure adequate free memory to complete the mission. Don’t clear the active track log. Caution: Do not cross track points while collecting a perimeter track log. Doing so may cause an incorrect area calculation, as well as data problems in GIS. Mark waypoint (press and hold Enter button). Name waypoint if desired. Do not edit date/time field. Press Menu button once to open Waypoint Options menu. Set Record Mode to OFF for setup. Set Interval to Time. Set Interval Value based on speed of travel during data collection, and size of area to be mapped. A total of 10,000 track points are available. Back Calculate Fire Perimeter Area After collecting a perimeter track, open Tracks page and select Save. Select log from list and press Enter button. Area will be displayed in selected format. Press Quit button to exit the track file without saving it. A saved track log will have fewer track points, reducing the quality of data in the file. Never clear an active track log until after its been downloaded.
