H a l l o w e e n

H alloween is a festival that takes place on O ctober 31. I n the United States children wear costumes and masks and go trick-or-treating. M any of them carve jack-o'- lantens out of pumpkins. F ortunetelling and storytelling about ghosts and witches are popular activities. H alloween developed from new year festivals and festivals of the dead. C hristian church established a festival on the first of N ovember called All S aints' D ay so that people could continue to celebrate their festivals.

T he M ass s aid on A ll S aints' D ay was called A llhallowmass. T he day before A ll S aints' D ay was known as all hallows' E ve or A ll H alloween. T he main H alloween activity for children is trick-or-treating. C hildren dress in costumes and masks and go from door to door saying "trick or treat". T he neighbours give children such treats as candy, fruit and pennies so that children do not play tricks on them.

J ack-o'-lanterns are hallowed-out pumpkins with face carved into one side. M ost jack-o'-lanterns contain a candle inside. A n I rish legend says that jack-o'- lanterns are named after the man called J ack. H e could not enter heaven because he was a miser, and he could not enter hell because he had played jokes on devil. A s a result, J ack has to walk on the earth with his lantern until J udgment D ay.

F ortunetelling is an important part of H alloween. F or example, a coin, a ring, and a thimble were baked into a cake. I t was believed that the person who found the coin would become wealthy. T he one who found the ring would marry soon. A nd the person who found the thimble would never get married. T oday people practice card reading or palmistry.

P eople once believed that there were many ghosts and witches on the E arth and that they met on O ctober 31 to worship the devil. T oday, people do not believe in ghosts and witches but they like to tell stories about them on H alloween. T he story of the holiday H alloween, which is still widely celebrated recently in the U.S.A. Only now gaining popularity in R ussia.
