Writing In Ancient Egypt  The Hieroglyphic Writing system used more then 600 symbols.  The Earliest know examples of Egyptian writing are from around 3300 BC.  These Early Egyptian writing were carved in stone or other hard materials.

Writing In Ancient Egypt Continued  Hieroglyphics could be written horizontally or vertically.  They could also be written from right to left or left to right.  Later, the Egyptian’s learned how to make papyrus (puh-PY-ruhs) a long lasting paper like material made from reeds.

The Rosetta Stone  Historians and Archaeologists have known about hieroglyphics for centuries, but for a long time they couldn’t read them.  It was not until 1799 when a lucky French soldier gave historians the key they needed to read ancient Egyptian writing.

Egyptian Texts  Because Papyrus did not decay in Egypt's dry climate, many texts survived.  Literary works have also survived.  Historian’s today can read Egyptian government and historical records, science texts, and medical manuals.

Egypt’s Great Temples  The Egyptians believed that temples were the homes of Gods.  People visited the temples to worship, offer Gods gifts, and ask for favors.  Egyptians built massive pyramids and also Temples.  Many Egyptian temples share the same features.

Egypt’s Great Temples Cont.  Usually Rows of stone sphinxes lined the path leading to entrance.  On either side of a gate might stand a obelisk (AH-buh-lisk) a tall four sided pillar that Is pointed at top.  Inside, Temples were lavishly decorated.  Huge columns supported the temple’s roof.
