Spellings

Each child is given one of these spelling sheets to use in school each day

The Key to Spelling Success Spellings need to be practised regularly. We do a spelling related activity every day and it is expected that pupils spend some time learning their spellings at home each day. When the spellings are introduced, we spend some time investigating the spelling pattern, the meaning of the words and how to use them in context.

How to: Look, cover, write, check (In 8 steps…) It’s nearly that simple… Step One: Look! Look at the word; try to learn to recognise it as a whole word

How to: Look, cover, write, check (In 8 steps…) Step Two: Say! Say it out loud whilst looking at the word. Do it three times (the power of three!). Then spell it out letter by letter.

How to: Look, cover, write, check (In 8 steps…) Step Three: Practise (air writing!) Have a practise without making any marks! Either, have a go at air writing with your finger. Or, hold a pencil (or pretend to) and practise writing the word.

How to: Look, cover, write, check (In 8 steps…) Step Four: Look! Again!

How to: Look, cover, write, check (In 8 steps…) Step Five: Look! Cover it up! No cheating, you need to test yourself

How to: Look, cover, write, check (In 8 steps…) Step Six: Look! Picture it in your mind We call this visualising.

How to: Look, cover, write, check (In 8 steps…) Step Seven: Write! Have a go at writing it down. Using joined up handwriting will help you spell words correctly.

How to: Look, cover, write, check (In 8 steps…) Step Eight Check! Have you got it right? Good work! Move onto the next one. If not, air write your word three times and better luck tomorrow.

Why it’s important to practice spellings every day
