THE TALIBAN

Origins Thousands of orphans as result of war with USSR Grow up in Pakistan Never knew parents Raised in Madras's (Paid for by Saudi’s) Raised to hate and fight “Jihad” Sunni Muslims

Rise of the Taliban Taliban means “One who seeks knowledge” Goal to restore peace, enforce “Sharia law” Years of civil war 1.5 million deaths Citizens desperate for stability Taliban seem like good choice

Mullah Omar Leader of the Taliban Fought against USSR

Taliban view of Women Fully covered Not allowed to work Do not leave house w/o male relative

Women Continued Banished women from the work force Closed schools to girls and women and expelled women from universities Prohibited women from leaving their homes unless accompanied by a close male relative Ordered the publicly visible windows of women's houses painted black and forced women to wear the burqa (or chadari) - which completely shrouds the body, leaving only a small mesh-covered opening through which to see Prohibited women and girls from being examined by male physicians while at the same time prohibited female doctors and nurses from working

Women Continued Taliban Reality for Women and Girls A woman who defied Taliban orders by running a home school for girls was killed in front of her family and friends. A woman caught trying to flee Afghanistan with a man not related to her was stoned to death for adultery. An elderly woman was brutally beaten with a metal cable until her leg was broken because her ankle was accidentally showing from underneath her burqa. Women and girls died of curable ailments because male doctors were not allowed to treat them. Two women accused of prostitution were publicly hung.

Downfall US invasion following 9/11 Refusal to give up Osama Bin Laden Currently regrouping and regaining territory in parts of Afghanistan

War in Afghanistan Begins on October 11 th 2001 Response to 9/11 Capture and remove Al Qaeda and Taliban Currently 50,590 US troops 89,000+ total UN troops from 42 countries
