 Complete Activity 2

 Friday, 2/13/2015 is the last day of the 4 th 6 weeks.  Monday, 2/16/2015 is a student holiday  Test corrections or make up grades – Need to be done this week  Unit 5 – Linear functions and Applications  Review – slope, slope intercept form  Applications of linear functions

 Slope is represented by the letter m  Slope is equal to the rise divided run  m

 Slope-intercept form is the equation of a line. Dependent variable It is also our y-coordinate Independent variable It is also our x-coordinate Slope Rate of change Rise over run y-intercept Where the line we are graphing crosses the y-axis

 when we change the y-intercept?  when we change the slope? hp?sectiondetailid=20019&fileitem=12704&catfilter=3599

 In the equations, determine the slope and the y-intercept 1. y=2x+1 m=_________ b=_________ 2. y=5x+8 m=_________ b=_________ 3. y=-½x+2 m=_________ b=_________

 Why do we need to know what linear equations are?  Let’s see why with an example

 The following table tells us the conversion from dollars to quarters. DollarsQuarters ? 132??

 So, back to our questions  Why do we need to know what linear equations are?  So, we do not have to solve a million problems to get the final answer.  We use the line that best fits our data to determine what our solutions are and equation of a line. ▪ Meaning, I do not have to solve a lot multiplication problems to plot each and every dollar to quarter point on the graph.

 It also helps us make predictions, using the best line that fits the data we do have.

 Bounce ball activity
