Overview  What is a portfolio?  Why should you have one?  Digital Identity  What to include?  How to use it?

Definition  Port – to move  Folio – papers or artifacts  A portable collection of papers/artifacts presented in a variety of formats  Hardcopy, electronic and web based.

What is a Career Portfolio?  Like a Wallet:  It is a place where you keep your prized possession and what is important to you.  Documentation that describes you and your capabilities.  Prove that you possess the skills and abilities.

Why should you bother making a portfolio?  Personal Development  Self Assessment  Skill Development  Career Exploration (3 A’s)  Further Education and Training  For marks/Class requirement

How it can help you?  Workplace/Interviews/Promotions/Schools  Career Development  Self Confidence  Marketing Tool  Assist in transitions  Credit (class/graduation)  Scholarships; Awards; Bursaries  Tool used to track and record learning experiences (skills, jobs, school, life)

Remember you want to include the following:  Best samples of your work that support the purpose of your portfolio  Apply for School  To show what you are good at.  To get a job?  Demonstrate learning

Task:  List 10 things you are most proud of.  What can you scan or create to put into your portfolio.

What should you collect?  Transcript  Attendance record  Resume  Certificate from school  Letters of recommendation  An essay, report or article  TOKW  Picture of a team you were on  A poem, quote, book that represents a value or belief that is important to you  A picture of a project or plaque  List of skills and how they were achieved  Brief description of courses taken  Short and long term goals  Report cards  Personal Career Development Plan  Personal Interest Inventories  Documentation of membership in a club  Extracurricular awards (swimming, scouts, etc.)  Picture or video of a completed report  First Aid/Babysitting/etc.  Picture of family  Trophies, badges, crests, certificates  Training  Participation in an ethnic or cultural organization  Faith development  Strengths  Abilities

Reflect  Reflection is a lifelong process. It helps you look at what you have done, analyze your results, measure your successes and adjust your conduct in the future. You did this naturally when you were a small child discovering how the world worked.  Reflect part allows you to ask yourself questions about the learning connected to the portfolio item. For example:  What have I learned?  What have I noticed  What would I do differently?  What strengths and weaknesses are shown in this item?  How does what I am doing affect my future choices?

Reflection continued  For most items included in your portfolio you will need to provide a reflection/justification.  Why did you include it? Why is it important?  What did you learn?

How to create your own sheets?  Microsoft publisher  Clip art/borders/colours  Word

Things to remember:  Order  Minimum of twenty items  Continuous project (don’t lose it and continue to develop your portfolio)
