Presentation transcript:

Sept. 15 was chosen as the starting point for the celebration because it is the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on Sept. 16 and Sept. 18, respectively.

During this month, America celebrates the culture and traditions of U.S. residents who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico and the Spanish- speaking nations of Central America, South America and the Caribbean.

In 1968, Congress authorized President Lyndon B. Johnson to proclaim a week in September as National Hispanic Heritage Week. The observance was expanded in 1988 to a month long celebration (Sept. 15-Oct. 15).

1. Helen Ochoa was also the world's first Hispanic female astronaut.

A Mexican-American who co-founded the United Farm Workers Union to make sure all workers were paid equally and treated fairly.

Compiled 3,000 hits but was regarded even more highly as perhaps the greatest defensive outfielder in history. The first Hispanic baseball player to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

1.What five Latin American countries celebrate their independence day on September 15? 2.When does Hispanic Heritage Month begin and when does it end? 3.What President declared a week in September as National Hispanic Heritage Week? 4.Who is: Helen Ochoa? 5.Who is Roberto Clemente?
