Reflecting a cultural revolution Fashion of the Sixties Reflecting a cultural revolution

A Decade of Change First part of decade reflects the conservative, idealistic Fifties, but the turmoil and rebellion of the times led to freer, more casual clothing.

Trends The 1960s ushered in an attitude of "anything goes" and reflected the shifting politics of the day. "Do your own thing" applied to clothes as well. They also embraced a back to nature attitude in clothes by wearing peasant blouses, granny dresses and carrying hemp bags. Men wore the casual look of grungy jeans and leather vests

Trends for women From the iconic Jacqueline Kennedy to the free spirited hippie, the Sixties woman experienced a range of choices.

The Mini The mini skirt was the fashion phenomenon of the sixties. Hemlines rose to 7 to 8 inches above the knee.

The Shift Dress This shift dress is typical of the swinging London style of the mid sixties. The bright colors and geometric patterns epitomize this period.

Most Common Looks Hippie dress: 1. Hip hugger, bell bottom jeans and wide leather belt. 2. Frayed jean bottoms 3. Halter top 4. Headband with flower. 5. Bare feet or Jesus sandals 6. A peace symbol. 7. Hair is long and "unkempt looking." Mod dress: 1. Women could wear a mini or even micro skirt with Go-Go boots . 2. A chain belt was groovy. 3. Colorful, synthetic fabrics 4. A-line dresses 5. Tights and pantyhose 6. Short, a- symmetrical hair styles

Fashion icon Twiggy was the first super thin model who changed the image advertisers sold clothing. She embraced the mod style of fashion.

Summer of ‘67 For mainstream youth fashion, everything changed in the Summer of 1967. The classic style was replaced with long hair, beads, and kaftans. Flower power was in the air. The look was psychedelic swirls and paisley patterns.

The Big Change Unisex dressing was popular, featuring bell bottomed jeans, love beads, and embellished t-shirts.

One look fits all Take a guess. Is this a boy or a girl?

The 1960s Fashion Was considered unorthodox or untraditional Reflected the influence of the youth movement Was about individualism and comfort
